LGBT rights have become increasingly significant within the European Union's enlargement process, serving as a litmus test of belonging to the European identity. At the same time, however, the promotion of these norms has created new arenas for political contestation. Rethinking European integration, the author argues that EU enlargement is a process of negotiated transformation in which EU policies and norms are defined, translated, and reshaped. Empirically, the book examines the promotion of and resistance to LGBT equality norms within Serbia's European integration process, while moving beyond policy analysis to explore how these negotiated transitions affect everyday life. This study received the 2025 Best Book Award from the European Union Studies Association (EUSA). It was also shortlisted for the 2024 Best Book Prize of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES).
